Sony RX1R II vs Sony ZV-E1: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Sony RX1R II 5.5 e⁻ (ISO 100), Sony ZV-E1 14.4 e⁻ (ISO 80).

Dual gain: Sony RX1R II ISO 640, Sony ZV-E1 ISO 1600.

Sony RX1R II

The Sony RX1R II (DSC-RX1RM2) was measured at 34 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.65 DN, or 5.5 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 640, cutting input-referred read noise by about 1.3 stop. From ISO 32000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 52,658 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 330.

Sony ZV-E1Twin

The Sony ZV-E1 was measured at 41 ISO settings from ISO 40 to ISO 409600. This model has no measurement of its own; the Sony a7S III, which uses the same sensor, is shown.

At base ISO (80) read noise is 1.01 DN, or 14.4 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 1600, cutting input-referred read noise by about 3 stop. From ISO 4000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 102400 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 227,834 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 1140.
