Sony a7 II vs Sony a7 IV: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Sony a7 II 5.1 e⁻ (ISO 100), Sony a7 IV 4.6 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Dual gain: Sony a7 II none, Sony a7 IV ISO 400.

Sony a7 II

The Sony a7 II (ILCE-7M2) was measured at 28 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.24 DN, or 5.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 320 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 20000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 65,656 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 410.

Sony a7 IV

The Sony a7 IV (ILCE-7M4) was measured at 37 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.12 DN, or 4.6 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 400, cutting input-referred read noise by about 1.4 stop. From ISO 3200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 65,432 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 410.
