Canon EOS R6 Mark II vs Canon EOS R8: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS R6 Mark II 6.2 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS R8 6.1 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Dual gain: Canon EOS R6 Mark II ISO 400, Canon EOS R8 none.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II

The Canon EOS R6 Mark II was measured at 33 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.04 DN, or 6.2 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 400, cutting input-referred read noise by about 1.6 stop. From ISO 6400 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 95,315 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 600.

Canon EOS R8

The Canon EOS R8 was measured at 33 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.04 DN, or 6.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 6400 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 102400 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 92,859 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 590.
