Sony RX100 IV vs Sony RX100 VI: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Sony RX100 IV 2.8 e⁻ (ISO 125), Sony RX100 VI 3.2 e⁻ (ISO 125).

Sony RX100 IV

The Sony RX100 IV (DSC-RX100M4) was measured at 23 ISO settings from ISO 80 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (125) read noise is 3.25 DN, or 2.8 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 6400 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 13,145 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 110.

Sony RX100 VI

The Sony RX100 VI (DSC-RX100M6) was measured at 23 ISO settings from ISO 80 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (125) read noise is 4.11 DN, or 3.2 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 3200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 11,975 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 100.
