Sony FX30 vs Sony NEX-3N: read noise comparison

Dual gain: Sony FX30 ISO 320, Sony NEX-3N none.

Sony FX30Twin

The Sony FX30 (ILME-FX30) was measured at 34 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 102400. This model has no measurement of its own; the Sony a6700 (ES), which uses the same sensor, is shown.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.57 DN, or 3.8 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 320, cutting input-referred read noise by about 1.2 stop. From ISO 1600 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 38,767 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 240.

Sony NEX-3NDxO

The Sony NEX-3N was measured at 8 ISO settings from ISO 200 to ISO 16000. Values were derived by Bill Claff from DxOMark lab data.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 0.94 DN. From ISO 800 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise.
