Sony a7S III vs Sony a850: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Sony a7S III 14.4 e⁻ (ISO 80), Sony a850 5.4 e⁻ (ISO 200).

Dual gain: Sony a7S III ISO 1600, Sony a850 none.

Sony a7S III

The Sony a7S III (ILCE-7SM3) was measured at 41 ISO settings from ISO 40 to ISO 409600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (80) read noise is 1.01 DN, or 14.4 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 1600, cutting input-referred read noise by about 3 stop. From ISO 4000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 102400 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 227,834 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 1140.

Sony a850

The Sony a850 (DSLR-A850) was measured at 19 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 1.22 DN, or 5.4 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 3200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 17,493 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 880.
