Sony a7 V (ES) vs Sony a77: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Sony a7 V (ES) 9.6 e⁻ (ISO 100), Sony a77 4 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Dual gain: Sony a7 V (ES) ISO 1000, Sony a77 none.

Sony a7 V (ES)

The Sony a7 V (ES) (ILCE-7M5) was measured at 37 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.10 DN, or 9.6 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 1000, cutting input-referred read noise by about 2.1 stop. From ISO 1000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 72,507 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 460.

Sony a77

The Sony a77 (SLT-A77V) was measured at 26 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 16000. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 3.39 DN, or 4 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 250 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 5000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 18,921 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 120.
