Ricoh GR II vs Ricoh GR III: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Ricoh GR II 4.5 e⁻ (ISO 100), Ricoh GR III 2.5 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Ricoh GR II

The Ricoh GR II was measured at 25 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 0.48 DN, or 4.5 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 38,641 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 940.

Ricoh GR III

The Ricoh GR III was measured at 31 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.61 DN, or 2.5 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1250 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 25600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 25,500 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 160.
