Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III vs Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III 4.1 e⁻ (ISO 200), Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II 6.3 e⁻ (ISO 200).

Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III was measured at 24 ISO settings from ISO 64 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 0.75 DN, or 4.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 2000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 21,320 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 1110.

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II

The Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark II was measured at 23 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 0.97 DN, or 6.3 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 800 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 24,773 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 1290.
