Nikon Z 9 vs Nikon Z fc: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Nikon Z 9 6.8 e⁻ (ISO 64), Nikon Z fc 5 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Dual gain: Nikon Z 9 ISO 500, Nikon Z fc none.

Nikon Z 9

The Nikon Z 9 was measured at 34 ISO settings from ISO 32 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (64) read noise is 2.00 DN, or 6.8 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 500, cutting input-referred read noise by about 2.2 stop. From ISO 800 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 25600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 52,458 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 210.

Nikon Z fc

The Nikon Z fc was measured at 30 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.40 DN, or 5 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 12800 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 55,261 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 360.
