Nikon D3X vs Nikon D4: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Nikon D3X 5.9 e⁻ (ISO 100), Nikon D4 16.2 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Nikon D3X

The Nikon D3X was measured at 20 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.06 DN, or 5.9 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 1600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 46,773 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 280.

Nikon D4

The Nikon D4 was measured at 31 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.25 DN, or 16.2 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 10000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 25600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 118,209 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 720.
