Nikon D3500 vs Nikon D3S: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Nikon D3500 3.8 e⁻ (ISO 100), Nikon D3S 25.1 e⁻ (ISO 200).

Nikon D3500

The Nikon D3500 was measured at 9 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 0.45 DN, or 3.8 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 800 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 33,019 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 830.

Nikon D3S

The Nikon D3S was measured at 27 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 5.13 DN, or 25.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 4000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 79,811 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 970.
