Nikon D1H vs Nikon D200: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Nikon D1H 19.3 e⁻ (ISO 200), Nikon D200 15.7 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Nikon D1H

The Nikon D1H was measured at 12 ISO settings from ISO 200 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (200) read noise is 2.28 DN, or 19.3 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 1600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 34,684 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 1690.

Nikon D200

The Nikon D200 was measured at 16 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 3200. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.19 DN, or 15.7 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 160 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 29,257 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 720.
