Nikon 1 V1 vs Nikon 1 V2: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Nikon 1 V1 13 e⁻ (ISO 100), Nikon 1 V2 8.8 e⁻ (ISO 160).

Nikon 1 V1

The Nikon 1 V1 was measured at 7 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.31 DN, or 13 electrons at the sensor. Read noise keeps falling across the measured range, so the camera isn't fully ISO-invariant there. Settings above ISO 3200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 23,040 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 560.

Nikon 1 V2

The Nikon 1 V2 was measured at 7 ISO settings from ISO 160 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (160) read noise is 3.05 DN, or 8.8 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1600 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 11,753 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 460.
