Canon EOS RP vs Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS RP 36.3 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II 18.1 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS RP

The Canon EOS RP was measured at 30 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 7.21 DN, or 36.3 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 10000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 40000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 79,455 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 500.

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II was measured at 22 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 14.32 DN, or 18.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 2000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 6400 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 20,142 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 130.
