Canon EOS Ra vs Canon EOS RP: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS Ra 9.1 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS RP 36.3 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS Ra

The Canon EOS Ra was measured at 27 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 40000. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.92 DN, or 9.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 5000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 75,089 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 470.

Canon EOS RP

The Canon EOS RP was measured at 30 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 7.21 DN, or 36.3 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 10000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 40000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 79,455 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 500.
