Canon EOS R100 vs Canon EOS R3 (ES): read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS R100 7.3 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS R3 (ES) 8.9 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Dual gain: Canon EOS R100 none, Canon EOS R3 (ES) ISO 1250.

Canon EOS R100

The Canon EOS R100 was measured at 23 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 3.48 DN, or 7.3 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 5000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 33,045 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 210.

Canon EOS R3 (ES)

The Canon EOS R3 (ES) was measured at 33 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.39 DN, or 8.9 electrons at the sensor. A second gain (dual gain) kicks in at ISO 1250, cutting input-referred read noise by about 1.5 stop. From ISO 3200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 102,073 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 650.
