Canon EOS D60 vs Canon EOS M: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS D60 14.6 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS M 13.9 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS D60

The Canon EOS D60 was measured at 5 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 1000. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 1.59 DN, or 14.6 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 100 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 36,426 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 920.

Canon EOS M

The Canon EOS M was measured at 9 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 8.00 DN, or 13.9 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 3200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 24,998 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 170.
