Canon EOS 800D vs Canon EOS 80D: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS 800D 5.2 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS 80D 5.8 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS 800D

The Canon EOS 800D was measured at 10 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 51200. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.36 DN, or 5.2 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 6400 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 25600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 35,012 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 220.

Canon EOS 80D

The Canon EOS 80D was measured at 24 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 25600. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.83 DN, or 5.8 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 5000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 16000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 32,529 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 210.
