Canon EOS 7D Mark II vs Canon EOS 800D: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS 7D Mark II 13.8 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS 800D 5.2 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS 7D Mark II

The Canon EOS 7D Mark II was measured at 25 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 51200. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 5.70 DN, or 13.8 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 4000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 16000 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 34,937 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 240.

Canon EOS 800D

The Canon EOS 800D was measured at 10 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 51200. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 2.36 DN, or 5.2 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 6400 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 25600 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 35,012 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 220.
