Canon EOS 760D vs Canon EOS 7D: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS 760D 10.5 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS 7D 12 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS 760D

The Canon EOS 760D was measured at 8 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 6.06 DN, or 10.5 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 3200 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 24,755 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 170.

Canon EOS 7D

The Canon EOS 7D was measured at 20 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 6.45 DN, or 12 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1250 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 3200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 26,690 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 190.
