Canon EOS 5DS vs Canon EOS 600D: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS 5DS 13.1 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS 600D 14.7 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS 5DS

The Canon EOS 5DS was measured at 21 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 12800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 5.62 DN, or 13.1 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 2500 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 6400 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 33,547 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 230.

Canon EOS 600D

The Canon EOS 600D was measured at 7 ISO settings from ISO 100 to ISO 6400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 7.84 DN, or 14.7 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 1600 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Full well at base ISO is about 26,796 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 190.
