Canon EOS 1D Mark IV vs Canon EOS 1D X: read noise comparison

Input-referred read noise at base ISO: Canon EOS 1D Mark IV 16.9 e⁻ (ISO 100), Canon EOS 1D X 30.7 e⁻ (ISO 100).

Canon EOS 1D Mark IV

The Canon EOS 1D Mark IV was measured at 26 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 102400. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 5.03 DN, or 16.9 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 5000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 12800 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 48,272 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 340.

Canon EOS 1D X

The Canon EOS 1D X was measured at 31 ISO settings from ISO 50 to ISO 204800. Values are Bill Claff's (Photons to Photos) direct measurements from raw files.

At base ISO (100) read noise is 5.31 DN, or 30.7 electrons at the sensor. From ISO 10000 up the camera is effectively ISO-invariant: raising ISO further doesn't meaningfully lower shadow noise. Settings above ISO 51200 don't change analog gain (digital push). Full well at base ISO is about 82,802 electrons; unity gain is around ISO 580.
